欧洲食品安全局（EFSA）虽然允许食物中添加氨基丁酸，规定氨基丁酸的膳食摄入量上限为550mg/d，但是其主要功能特性尚需严格的人群试验结果加以佐证。美国食品药品监督管理局（FDA）根据毒理学实验结果指出食品中添加氨基丁酸是安全的，使用范围包含饮料、咖啡、茶和口香糖等，但不允许在婴儿食品、肉制品或含肉产品中添加。中国卫生部2009年12号公告，氨基丁酸摄入量不得超过500mg/d，使用范围为饮料、可可制品、巧克力及其饮料、糖果、焙烤食品和膨化食品，但婴儿食品中不能添加。
